図像統計からピクトグラフィック·アニメーションへ

フィリップ･ラーガンのピクトグラフィック・アニメーションによる「事実のドラマ化」（1934−1949）

6.おわりに

本稿では、グラフィックからアニメーションまで、ラガンの活動をたどった。ラガンの仕事は、絵画的な統計に加えて、アニメーションを意識した物語性のある図やイラストのデザインが中心であった。そして、この方向性は、国立映画制作庁に特徴的なピクトグラムを用いたアニメーションーピクトグラフィック･アニメーションの実験によって強化された。

セカレッリ（Ceccarelli, 2012）は、「情報アニメーション」の歴史的概観の中で、その特徴を次のようにまとめている。

巧妙な説明技術と組み合わせ、ストーリーテリングの力を借りれば、実写のリアリズム（演出されたショットから粗いライブラリの映像まで）、きれいな科学的なアニメーションが提供する本物の雰囲気、グラフィカルなアニメーションの抽象化の力、視聴者を惹きつけるカートゥーンの能力は、全体として非常に強力なシステムとなる。

ラーガンの代表作《One world or none》は、これらの複数のパターンを組み合わせた複雑で洗練されたピクトグラフィック・アニメーションの先駆的な例であり、その点でもドキュメンタリー映画に挿入される形でのみ制作されていたアイソタイプ・アニメーションとは大きく異なっていた。

以上のようにラーガンの作品は、ヨーロッパの啓蒙主義の産物であるアイソタイプと、北米の娯楽アニメーション文化を融合させた「事実の劇化」のユニークな展開であった。また、歴史的にも、ニューディールに始まり、戦争プロパガンダへの奉仕を経て、原子爆弾をコントロールするための科学者たちのキャンペーンから冷戦下における反共プロパガンダに至るまで、大きく変動したこの時代の一連の社会的・政治的背景の中で展開された、ピクトグラムを用いたアニメーションの可能性と限界を示す興味深い実験と位置づけることができる。
